Veteran Davaoeño chesser gets 2nd place in chess duo tourney

DAVAO CITY – A veteran male woodpusher based here finished second in a duo online chess tournament last April 4.

National Master Jonathan Tan, the 1988 Philippine Junior Champion, and his teammate Orlando Balao Jr. scored 103 points to finish second in the Chess Battle Duo organized by United Queens Chess Club (UQCC).

Tan and Balao are both  happy  with their performance in the tournament participated in by some of the top chessers in the Philippines.

Tan is on a roll these days because March 11 Tan won the  Cavite Spartans Bullet Practice Arena.

The Davaoeno chesser scored 42 points to win the online chess tournament participated in by some of the top chessers in the Philippines.

Tan was superb in the tournament as he won 14 games and just suffered four defeats.

The chess tournament was hosted by International Master Petronio Roca and organized by Bayanihan Chess Club.

Last October 18, 2020, Tan also finished in fourth place in the tough Iloilio Professional Chess Association (IPCA) Online Chess Tournament.

Some of the top chessers in the Philippines including grandmasters Joey Antonio and Darwin Laylo joined the tournament.

Tan won P1,000 as a prize in the tournament won by Ellan Asuela who won P5,000.
