DAVAO CITY – Rain or Shine assistant coach Chris Gavina has been promoted as the newest head coach of one of the longest franchises in the PBA.
Gavina a former head coach of Terrafirma also in the PBA and in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) replaces long-time Rain or Shine head coach Caloy Garcia.
On its official FB page on Monday, Rain or Shine revealed Garcia will take the new role as an active consultant and the team’s head of basketball operations.
Rain or Shine has yet to state the reason for the sudden coaching change, but basketball experts surmise it could be due to the team’s effort to become even stronger in the next PBA season.
Gavina is expected to have a hand in the PBA draft selection of the team on March 14.
Sources said Rain or Shine is looking to draft a point-guard reportedly athletic guard Mikey Williams to boost its backcourt.
In his PBA and MPBL coaching career, Gavina is known as a defensive-minded bench tactician.
