7 Davaoeno chess players join 3.3 Asian Zonal Chess Championships 2021

DAVAO CITY—Seven of the brightest chess stars in the Davao region are joining the tough 3.3 Asian Zonal Chess Championships 2021 which features six nations in Asia on May 1-10.

The seven chessers carrying the flag of Region 11 (Davao Region) and the Philippines in general in international online chess tournaments are Davaoenos International Master John Marvin Miciano, Fide Master Austin Jacob Literatus, veteran chesser Allan Diez, sibling Gabriel John, and Samantha Umayan.

Also included in the tournament are Panabo City chessers Arena Grand Masters (AGM) Henry Lopez and Christian Gian Karlo Arca.

The top two winners in the tournament will advance to the Chess World Cup set in August in Minsk, Russia.

The event played online with each player given 90 minutes to finish 40 moves followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game with a 30-second increment per move.

However, games will be played in assigned playing venues to be manned by a chief arbiter.

Fifty-two players from six nations are taking part in the event that has a prize fund of $1,500 (about P75,000).
