DAVAO CITY – A member of Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) involved in gun smuggling was killed in a police operation in Sitio Buton, Barangay Kansipat, Panamao, Sulu Province this morning (February 20).

Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief General Debold M. Sinas, identified the suspect as Wahid Sahid, an active member of ASG and Kidnap for Ransom (KFR) Sulu-based under ASG sub leader Almujir Yadah and Private Armed Group operating in the 2nd District of Sulu.

Police also tagged Sahid for smuggling of firearms and providing high-powered firearms to ASG and KFR in Zamboanga City and Sulu province.

The joint operation was conducted by the personnel from Anti-Kidnapping Group Mindanao Field Unit, Regional Mobile Force Battalion-9, Mindanao Area Police Intelligence Office (MAPIO), and Panamao Municipal Police Station against Sahid for illegally selling high-powered firearms.

The arresting team, upon the signal of the poseur-buyer, immediately rushed to the house of Sahid. However, the suspect fired instantly at the arresting team using an M14 rifle. The law enforcers immediately sought cover and fatally fired back at Sahid.

The police operatives foiled a kidnapping plot by Sahid  as directed by ASG Sub Leader Almujir Yadah, the PNP chief revealed.

Further investigation disclosed that the slain suspect was monitored in Barangay Labuan, Zamboanga City last January 2021, allegedly spotting prominent families for possible kidnapping.

Recovered from the scene were one M14 rifle with magazine and bullets; another M14 rifle without magazine; one  M4 Caliber 5.56mm with short magazine and bullets with attached M203 Grenade Launcher; and two 40mm ammunition.
