NPA leader, wife killed in Agusan del Sur clash

DAVAO CITY- A ranking New People’s Army (NPA) leader and his wife were killed in an encounter with soldiers of 67th Infantry Battalion in Barangay Sta. Maria, Trento, Agusan Del Sur on Monday, April 26.

The fatalities were identified as  Danny Huit, Secretary of Guerilla Front North of the Sub-Regional Command 1, Southern Mindanao Regional Committee (SMRC) and Naneth G. Catalino, a member and medic of the said group.

In a report, military troops acted on information from the communities in relation to the presence of some NPA rebels in the said barangay when the two warring parties met and figured in a brief gunfight that led to the death of the couple. 

Military records showed  Huit has five pending warrants of arrest for one count of frustrated murder, one count of homicide, two counts of arson and one count rebellion pending before the  Regional Trial ourt (RTC 11) branches 7, 32 and 3.

Lieutenant Colonel Louie Dema-ala, the 67th IB commander of the said “The timely and immediate reporting of the civilians about the presence of the Communist Terrorist Groups in the area is the biggest factor of this successful neutralization of Huit or Ka Bosyong, the Front secretary of GF North.Their timely information led to the immediate action in our part that resulted to this significant accomplishment.” 

 “To the remaining members of GF North, we are encouraging you to abandon the twisted and violent ideology and peacefully surrender to avail the programs of the government. But for those CTGs who refuse to heed the Government’s call to lay down their arms, the 67IB will hunt you down until the last member is neutralized,” Dema-ala said.

Colonel Oliver Maquiling, the 701st Brigade Commander lauded the 67IB troops for a job well done.

Major General Ernesto C Torres Jr  also commended the troops and the leadership of 701st Brigade with its units for prompt action in maintaining peace and order in the area. ” I would like to extend my commendation to the steadfast and determined commitment to duty of the 67th Infantry Battalion, 701st Brigade and the troops for ensuring peace in our area of responsibility. Team Agila will continue to perform its mandate of protecting the people from lawless elements and terrorists. We will not give them an inch to bring terror in a peace-loving community.” 

Should they (NPA) fear us, they can accept our offer of a smooth and beneficial surrender. The government is much willing to provide them an opportunity to have a better life than reigning terror,” Torres said.
