Matanao mayor’s bodyguard shot dead in Davao del Sur

DAVAO CITY- Two armed men fatally gunned down the security guard of Matanao town mayor in Davao del Sur at Purok Sampaguita, Barangay Bato, Santa Cruz, in said province yesterday afternoon (Feb. 21).

Santa Cruz Chief of Police Major Crisaldo Gaila confirmed the killing of Jerwel Alpeche Elentorio, 38.  He is a resident of Purok Mahayahay, Matanao, Davao del sur and bodyguard of Matanao Mayor Vincent Fernandez.

Gaila told News Fort that Elentorio sustained multiple gunshot wounds on his face and left side of his body. He was rushed to a hospital in Digos City but was declared dead on arrival.

Gaila said based on the statement of the witness, while they were having a family bonding at Passig Islet in Barangay Bato, the victim suddenly asked permission to leave to get their service vehicle at the parking area of the resort.

The witness told the investigators that while Elentorio was walking and was talking to somebody over his mobile phone, one of the two suspects opened fire at him, killing him instantly.

After he fell, the suspect took the sling bag of the victim then boarded a motorcycle driven by another suspect.  

Several empty shells of bullets of .45 caliber pistols were recovered from the crime scene, including the victim’s cellular phone.

Gaila added that investigations of the incident are still ongoing to establish the motive of the case and identify the assailants.

“We are deepening our investigation. In fact we already coordinated with the victim’s family to get more information so that we can establish the motive of the incident , including the identity of the two suspects,” Gaila said in an interview with News Fort.
