23 NPA rebels surrender in Mindanao

DAVAO CITY - Twenty three members of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) operating in Zamboanga del Sur surrendered to police authorities on Thursday (February 25).

DAVAO CITY – Twenty three members of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) operating in Zamboanga del Sur surrendered to police authorities on Thursday (February 25).

In a ceremony held in Duelic, Lapuyan, Zamboanga del Sur, the rebel returnees who were all members of Barangay Revolutionary Committee / Sangay sa Partidong sa Lokalidad based in Purok 2 and Purok 3 of Barangay Duelic, Midsalip, Zamboanga del Sur voluntarily surrendered to officials of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Zamboanga del Sur and to the Municipal Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict in said town.

PNP Chief General Debold Sinas in a statement said the 23 rebel returnees were also part of the organized masses known as Barangay Revolutionary Committee under Guerilla Front KARA of the Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee (WMRPC) headed by Jonathan Cruz and Main Regional Guerilla Unit-WMRPC under Ruel Monasque Also known as Jotham.

He said the massive surrender of NPA rebels is the result of relentless Intelligence campaign of the PNP Intelligence Group through sincere dialogue and negotiations made at the foremost Militia ng Bayan (MB) areas in line with the National Task Force 70 to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF70-ELCAC).

“Their surrender is a setback to the local communist movement as they took on important roles in sustaining the CPP-NPA existence by providing vital information, food, medicines and other combat materials,” Sinas said.
